Ed Sheeran is a master of the “Perfect” cheesesteak. While in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, between gigs, the hitmaker stopped at Philips Steaks to feed fans the city’s famous sandwich, the Philly cheesesteak. Sheeran’s appearance was documented on social media. The “Eyes Closed” singer stopped by the fast-food restaurant in the late afternoon, only hours before his performance at Lincoln Financial Field. Fans swarmed the streets surrounding the family-run restaurant to see Sheeran’s covert pop-up. He paused to greet admirers before putting his culinary skills to the test.

“Obviously, it’s cheesesteak time in Philly.” “I’m going to go learn how to make a cheesesteak,” Sheeran stated in a selfie video. The platinum-selling artist worked alongside the owners, brothers Joseph and Philip Baldino, in the kitchen. The two shared their secret recipe as well as the method to their madness, demonstrating how to make the perfect sandwich. “In Philly, it’s slabs, slabs of ribeye,” Joseph Baldino explained over the hot stove. “This is Whiz Cheese,” he said, pointing to a large tub. Baldino then proceeded to demonstrate and encourage the singer to pay close attention. “You made the next one,” he explained to Sheeran.

Sheeran was a grill maestro, holding a roll in one hand and a spatula in the other to flip the steak. He finished the meal with a cheese drizzle and presented it to a customer who was waiting outside the service window. “It’s perfect,” the woman said after taking a big piece and gave a thumbs up. Sheeran happily proclaimed to the enormous line of people waiting outside that every sandwich was on him and free of charge. “This is beyond unbelievable, and I’ve got to tell you, I think Ed did just a little bit better than my brother Philip for his first time making a cheesecake,” Baldino said.

The chart-topping singer is well-known for his spontaneous pop-ups. He most recently worked as a beer server at a local brewery in Atlanta, Georgia. He also surprised a high school marching band in Florida and played “Thinking Out Loud” in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood. Sheeran’s next performance will be on June 10 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Mathematics Tour will conclude in late September in California.
