As Mötley Crüe’s World Tour 2023 begins its European leg, bassist Nikki Sixx spoke with Jen Thomas of the UK’s Metro. The topic shifted when Sixx brought up his ongoing feud with former bandmate Mick Mars. In reference to the legal dispute, he stated: “I mean, the silliest thing I’ve ever read about us came from Mick Mars’ lawyers.” I’m simply so sad about what’s occurred… They stated that the band does not perform live. We’re like, who’s playing bass now? It’s one of the funniest things ever.”

He also commented on media clickbait titles, saying: “Imagine being in a rock’n’roll band for 42 years, and then a guy in a suit announces that the band is no longer playing. The dumbest thing is that they don’t cross-check because of the way a lot of media is these days. They simply run with headlines, which we term clickbait. That’s about as ridiculous as it gets.”

While the guitarist’s assertions gained traction and the support of luminaries such as Carmine Appice and Stephen Pearcy, not everyone agreed with him. Mötley Crüe’s John 5 addressed the subject in a recent interview with Trunk Nation’s Eddie Trunk, defending the band’s live performances. After saying that he regarded the claims as a compliment, the band’s current guitarist stated: “You can hear bum notes in these concerts I do with [Nikki].” Do you really believe we’d put a mistake on a track? No! It’s insane, but he absolutely plays every single note on there. Just listen to the broadcasts before making these claims since you’ll hear blunders. That is what rock and roll is all about.

Yes, technology is used for backup vocals, intros, outros, sirens, and horn hits. Naturally, they’ve been doing it since ‘Dr. Feelgood.’ “I’m not saying we don’t rely on technology for things we can’t do ourselves, but me, Nikki, Tommy, and Vince; we’re all up there.” The accusations did not stop with live performances; Nikki Sixx has been accused by several sources of not personally playing the bass sections on the band’s early releases. With opposing narratives flying from both sides, it appears that the feud between Mars and Mötley Crüe is far from over.
